Alex Higginbottom

Piano, Clarinet, Saxophone,

Music Theory

Alex has always taken a keen interest in music, being able to read music before English. He began playing piano at the age of 5 and was Grade 8 standard by the time he was 15.

Alex then took up the clarinet aged 7 and quickly progressed through exams and the Leicestershire Schools Ensembles. Starting in the Junior Concert Band and finishing in the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra, with whom I toured the Black Forest with pre-COVID.

To stimulate his passion for jazz and big band music he began learning the saxophone so he could join the Leicestershire Schools Big Band, of which he is still a part of. He has taken his love of jazz further, having played alongside members of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and in smaller jazz groups that have played all over the Midlands.

As an A-Level Music student, Alex is also incredibly interested in music theory and has been writing his own jazz music for saxophone, and will be studying for a Music degree at University soon.

Alex has been teaching freelance for 6 months, teaching people aged 9-35+ and from beginner to intermediate level on piano, clarinet, saxophone, and music theory. As a teacher, Alex aims to get the best out of his students, as he recognises that each student is different, will like different styles, will have different goals, and will interact differently in the lesson. Alex will tailor his lessons accordingly to ensure that he increases their enthusiasm and passion for music. The lessons are not all classical as an exposure to more uncommon genres is encouraged to go alongside the classical, pop, jazz that Alex particularly enjoys teaching.
