Nancy Crane (Violin Teacher) - Biography

Nancy began her violin studies at the age of nine with the Leicestershire Arts peripatetic teachers, Marie Hewes and Ron Willoughby. She then gained a place on the Specialist Music Course at the 'Rowans' Leicestershire School of Music where she was taught by director and violin tutor Stuart Johnson and went on to gain her her double A Level music.

During these years Nancy played with the Leicestershire Schools Orchestras and worked her way up to the positions of Co-Leader and Leader of the Symphony and Chamber Orchestras and gained valuable experience touring and performing in various countries and UK venues including the Cheltenham Music Festival and Whitehall.

In 1991 Nancy was awarded the Young Person's Michael Tippet Bursary and then went on to gain a place on the graduate course at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with Professors Benedict Holland and Wen Zhou Li. Further to her studies here, Nancy spent much of her time writing electronic music and went on to gain a recording contract with a London based record company and focused on her music production.

Nancy has gained much experience in playing and performing with various symphony and chamber orchestras including the Royal Northern College of Music, The Bardi Orchestra and the Leicester Symphony Orchestra and has participated in many violin masterclasses, solo and duet performances including performing at the BAFTA Awards Ceremony in London and has also attended instrumental teaching workshops organised by the ABRSM.

In 2006 Nancy began studying string pedagogy methods and shortly after began teaching the violin, providing tuition for the ABRSM and Trinity College London violin and theory exams as well as general lessons just for fun and teaches students of all ages (5+) and abilities from beginner to diploma level. Nancy also currently teaches at two local primary schools where she has helped prepare students for end of year concerts and exams.

Nancy has an excellent pass rate for violin exams and many of her students have gained distinctions and merits. Nancy also prepares students for local competitions and one of her students was awarded 'Leicestershire Young Performer of the Year' and went on to gain a place at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of Music Junior Department and another of her students reached the finals.

Nancy now focusses on teaching the violin and spends much of her free time writing electronic music, street busking and playing electric violin in a local band. Nancy's approach to teaching is very much student centered and lessons are tailored to each student's individual needs and aspirations. Nancy's main focus is to ensure that students enjoy playing the violin and develop a deeper love and understanding of music. Lessons are mainly centered on classical music, but folk fiddle and pop music is another area of teaching that Nancy enjoys.
